Review of Characterization

Concept 16 - Relatable characters give a story an audience

Concept 17 - Relatable characters come from everywhere. Use people you've met. "passed experiences"

Concept 35 -When losing isn't an option - obstacles are good but they have to figure it out eventually

Concept 38 -Conflict grows out of a character
Working with different types of people, your friends are one thing. But when it comes to working in a group with different people things are difficult. Like working on a movie , your stuck in working with people with all kinds of different ideas being shot at.

Concept 39 - Character grows out of conflict
characters have to evolve with whats happening

Concept 40 - Way a character surpasses a challenge itself. Hero's Journey

Techniques used from script in movie

Camera is not a camera - looking in the eyes of Jeff
Use humor to add tension - stella says I don't want to see any "part" of her
Warning may cause macguffin: clues for the body
Suspense is information: when the detective says Thorwald is ready to take them on a trip to the East River
Surprise and Twist : when jeff gets hung out the window

Use Humor to add Tension

Dialogue Means Nothing - Use facial expressions, have one character not listening to another, dialogue can be a lie.

Keep the story simple: linear and streamlined, story simple but characters complex

Characters Must Break Cliche: List breaks into apartment (unlikely) Thorvald respectable murderer

Use humor to add tension: Stella is talking about blood being splattered on walls, bacon is being eaten with blood dripping off it.

Two things happening at once:  Two things happening to distract viewers
different things going on in the windows

Suspense is information: dog returning to garden

Surprise and Twist: son is mom in pshyco, rear windwo has moments where thorvald doesn't seem to be murdrer

Warning may cause MacGuffin: Drives story forward ! the thing everybody wants psycho -$40,000

Hitchcock's suspense

Techniques used for Rear Window:
1) Frame for Emotion
by facing the camera to the object like the man who "killed" his wife
2) Camera is not a Camera
Following the suspenseful parts everywhere it went
3) Dialogue means nothing
When the main character is sleeping, and stuff happens

Concept 66 #1

One thing I said that was mis-interpreted was when I was talking about somebody's dress which was very exotic, someone who overheard took it the wrong way as if I was saying I disliked the dress, I confronted the girl who wore the dress, and told her it was miscommunication that I actually really liked the dress, and I was going to recommend it for someone to wear.

How did they add suspense?

They added suspense by not showing the faces of the nurses and doctors and making Ms. Tyler seem like she has a horrible looking face.

concept 62 #1

If I were to make a film of the late Rosa Parks I would use flashbacks of different types of racial segregation. Not just Rosa Parks being refused to get on the bus, but other incidents and end with Rosa Parks and the life changing decision that effected everyone in the end.
